Overcoming Doubt

Jul 21, 2024

Lately I feel like doubt is around every corner. I tend to question every decision I have to make. I hesitate before I act on things. I second-guess the things I know God has promised.

It makes me feel angry at myself. Especially when I see Him working and taking care of me, of providing everything I need, of blessing me with so many good things. Why do I continually doubt? Why do I let insecurities take over my thoughts and rule my mind? Why do I worry about the future?

Recently I was reading 2 Corinthians 13, and verse 7 struck me. “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” Normally I look at those words from the perspective of how I need to better love the people around me. But then it hit me – those words describe how God loves me. He bears my doubtful mentality and he endures my wavering faith. He puts up with all my fears and anxieties. His love “always protects and always perseveres.”

How reassuring to know that even though I am unstable and unsteady, God loves me with a love that is faithful and never-changing. He set His love on me from before the beginning of time, and He will love me for eternity, despite all the times I waver.

According to G.K. Chesterton, we are born to be doubtful and should expect doubts to come into our minds. He says that only “materialists and madmen never have doubts.” It is part of our make-up.

But it is what we do with the doubt that matters. He proposes that only the weak have the opportunity to be brave, and that if we face our doubts with bravery, we can actually become stronger in our faith. He points out, “Only those who can be brave can be trusted, in time of doubt, to be strong.”

If we face our fears and doubts with bravery, we will fight through them, and God can grow our faith.

So today, when I find myself doubting, I will determine to be brave. And I will rely on God’s strength to hold me and lift me up, thankful that He loves me through it all.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
