Soul-piercing Words

Feb 3, 2025

“For the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”   Hebrews 4:12

I have plenty of books stacked on shelves throughout my house, but how many can I say are “living and active?” How many books pierce the spirit and the soul and cut through your innermost parts? How many books reveal the workings of your heart?

God’s Word is sharp and powerful!

The words on the pages of the Bible have slashed at my conscience, revealing sin and paving the way for repentance. “Then desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin. And sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death.” James 1:15

The words have punctured my soul when I’ve been in dark places, lifting me when my faith was low. “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him, my salvation and my God.”  Psalm 42:5.

They have cut to my heart in the midst of suffering, reminding me of my Savior’s sacrifice. “And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciples.” Luke 14:27

They have sliced through my doubts and insecurities, pointing me to God’s promises. “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”  Isaiah 41:10

The words of scripture are not always easy to hear. Sometimes they must pierce my hardened and calloused heart. Sometimes they shake me from my self-centeredness. Sometimes they push me to places I’m not sure I want to go. But every time, they give me the perspective I need to lead me to a place of understanding and hope.

John Calvin said, “We must not be gently pricked or scratched, but we must be deeply wounded, so that we are laid low by the sense of eternal death and learn to die to ourselves.”

What other book can do such a thing? How blessed are we to have access to such piercing and powerful words?

Lord, thank you for giving us Your life-changing Word. Help us not to take the Bible for granted, but to realize the incredible power held within its pages. Let us continually turn to it for wisdom and strength, and use it to help us grow in our faith.
