My Heart is a Factory

Aug 25, 2025

“Do not turn to idols, or make for yourselves any gods of cast metal; I am the Lord your God.”

Leviticus 19:4

At the time when God gave His law to His people, we know that hand-made idols were commonly used throughout the civilized world. Most cultures made a habit of forming wooden, metal, or gold images that they worshiped, prayed to, and included in all kinds of rituals.

How crazy! Putting time, money, hopes and dreams into something that is useless and has no power. Thank goodness we don’t struggle with that today.

Ha!

An idol can be defined as anything that takes God’s place at #1 in our lives. And Satan will make use of anything and everything he can to put something else in that place. Martin Luther described our hearts as “idol factories.” We are constantly letting things of this world crowd in and occupy God’s rightful place.

Often we are aware of the areas we struggle with. But sometimes “idols” sneak their way into our lives without us realizing it. This week I had the realization that finding approval and success in the world’s eyes is something I idolize. Why do I need any recognition or glory for myself? That should not come before my desire to please and glorify God.

And what about the things in my life that are good? My family, my hobbies, even the beauty I enjoy in creation?  If they push their way in front of God, they become idols. I am then worshipping the created, rather than the Creator.

The enemy is on the attack, tempting us with so many attractive worldly desires. We must constantly examine our hearts and battle, holding fast to the reminder: “I am the Lord your God.”  God commands first place.

God, help me to search my idol-factory heart to find what I am putting over my relationship with You. Help me fight against the things of this world in order to keep you at Number One in my life.
