Can you imagine sleeping at night with your head resting on a stone or a block of wood? Believe it or not, those were pillows of ancient times! The Chinese had their own version of pillows–headrests made of porcelain that were even designed to be works of art. It wasn’t until the mass production of textiles in the 18th century that we began to figure out how to make a good comfortable pillow! Now we have pillows of every size and firmness level, made from things like memory foam and even with built-in cooling agents, customizable to each person’s specific needs.
Just as a good pillow is essential for a good night’s sleep, a proper perspective of God’s sovereignty is essential for peace and comfort in the trials of life. The English preacher Charles Spurgeon clarifies this metaphor:
“Christian! There is no sweeter pillow than providence; and when providence seems adverse, believe it still. Lay it under thy head, depend upon it, there is comfort in its bosom. There is hope for thee thou child of God!”
Life is often out of control. Our days on this earth bring chaos, conflict, and pain. How do we make sense of the suffering and confusion that we face? There is only one sure way to find comfort, and that is by trusting in God’s providence.
Providence is defined as the fact that God, in His wisdom and power, orchestrates all events to fulfill His purposes and bring about His will (Biblehub.com). Colossians 1:17 tells us “All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in His all things hold together.”
And the true comfort is knowing that, even though we may not see it or feel it, God’s plan is good. Paul says in Romans 8:28, “And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.”
It is in these words that our anxious hearts can find a soft place to lie.
