On the Verge of Shipwreck

Aug 17, 2025

Chaos. Anxiety. Frustration. Desperation. The pressures of life can feel a lot like the windstorm on the Sea of Galilee depicted in this painting by Simon de Vos.

Sometimes taking a minute to gaze at a painting can really shine light on a situation and speak to your heart.

As the waves swirl around the boat, it looks completely out of control. Matthew 8:24 says the boat was “being swamped by the waves,” and the disciples became frantic, feeling they were on the point of death. This sure seems to parallel my life at times. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and anxious when life throws us unexpected twists and turns.

As I gaze at this painting, I think about which of the disciples in the boat best represent my state of mind. Some of them are desperately crying out, faces twisted in panic, one even throwing up his hands in anguish. Several just sit there helplessly staring out at the sea, watching things grow worse and worse, as if they’ve given up hope. And a few of them are climbing the masts, as if getting as far away as they can from the rough seas will help them avoid the problem. The chaos of the scene is overwhelming.

But the painter uses light to draw our eyes to the front of the boat where Jesus is sleeping peacefully. And there we see some of the disciples turning towards Jesus, trying to wake Him. These are the ones who are going to the true source of help. Because in the midst of the raging sea, Jesus isn’t phased a single bit. He is the One who can provide peace.

As the turmoil of life surrounds me, where is my focus? How am I handling the waves of confusion and turmoil? Are my eyes continually fixed on Jesus, the one who has the power to calm my restless heart just as he calms the restless sea? Because thanks to Him, this story has a peaceful ending. Thanks to Him, there is always hope.

Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Matthew 8:26
