The Consistency of Change

Oct 6, 2025

The only thing that is consistent in life is change!

The older I get, the more I like to stay in my cozy little comfort zone where everything feels safe and easy.

A week and a half ago we moved our entire school – the 7th-12th grades –  into another building nearby. The acquisition of the new building happened very suddenly two weeks prior.  It ruffled every change-fearing feather in my body. This move is a very good thing – it will give us much more space, make our school day flow more easily, and benefit our students in so many ways. But even change for the better is accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts.

I know that a key to handling change is my attitude. I can easily panic and freak out (which I tend to do). I can let the setbacks get to me and frustrate me. Or I can determine to smile and make the best of things.

Charles Swindoll wrote this on attitude:

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.

Attitude to me is more important than facts.

It is more important that the past,

than education, than money,

than circumstances, than failures, than successes.,

than what other people think, say or do.

It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill.

It will make or break a company, a church, a home.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice

every day regarding the attitude

We embrace for the day.”

I think he has a good point here. Our attitudes impact our lives so much. But it’s pretty tough to just force a good attitude into my heart on my own. Starting the day in the Word of God and in prayer is what calibrates my heart to an attitude that is grateful and positive. Because in this ever-changing world, “Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)

The God who created this universe is immutable – He is unchanging and unchangeable. He is perfectly holy, and therefore cannot change for the better or for the worse. He just IS.

How comforting to know that every day we can rely on a God who is constant. A God who is reliable. A God who is always there. A God who is always complete in His goodness and His love for us. A God who has a purpose which will come to pass, without a doubt.

Thank you, God, that with all the bumps and detours of life I know that you are steady and sure. Help me ride the waves with a reliance on you.

Kris, thank you for sharing words of wisdom and truth in such a meaningful way! Today’s blog is perfect because I’m scheduled to meet my boss for lunch and let her know I’ll be retiring at the end of this school year. I’m not sure what is happening immediately after that, but I do know I’m supposed to take this step. Peace and grace to you!

Thank you, Kris. I need this today. Aging isn’t always easy or fun and sometimes my attitude about it is not good especially when it comes with health problems. I need to choose to have a good attitude and I do start the day with prayer and scripture..

Some changes are much harder than others and I know aging is one of the hardest! Praying for you, Deanna. Thank you for sharing.
